A circuit bench of the Patna High Court was set up in Ranchi on 6th March 1972, as per clause 36 of the Letter Patent of that High Court. This bench was established to cater to the needs of the Adivasi Population in the Chota Nagpur area of the former State of Bihar.
The Circuit bench was designated as the Permanent Bench of the Patna High Court through Act no. 57 of 1976, under the High Court at Patna (Establishment of Permanent Bench at Ranchi) Act 1976, effective from 8 April 1976.
The Jharkhand High Court was formed following the reorganization of the state of Bihar into Bihar and Jharkhand on 15 November 2000.
