Earlier, the Munsif Court in Mathura was located near the District Civil Hospital, now known as Vikas Market. In 1902, it was shifted to a new building, now known as the Old Munsifi Compound, situated opposite the Judgeship. Over time, courts of Civil Judge (later renamed as Civil Judge Senior Division) and Additional Sessions Judge were established. The Mathura Sessions Division came into existence in 1951, with Shri Girish Chandra Srivastava serving as its first District Sessions Judge, who assumed charge on 25th September 1951. The Judgeship has been home to many eminent District Judges, many of whom were later elevated to the Hon’ble High Court, including Shri O.P. Mehrotra, Shri N.B. Asthana, Shri P.K. Jain, Shri J.C. Mishra and others.

The Mathura district is divided into four tehsils: Sadar, Chhata, Mant and Mahavan. An Outer Court is functioning at Chhata since 22 December 1997. The judiciary of this district has a legacy of producing eminent judges who have made significant contributions to the legal framework and justice delivery system of the state.
