Sant Kabir Nagar Judgeship was established in 1998, formed by merging parts of the Basti and Siddhartha Nagar districts. The district was named after the renowned saint, Sant Kabir Das, whose Mazar and Samadhi are located in Maghar. Khalilabad, which was previously a Tehsil headquarters of Basti district, was designated as the headquarters of both the district and the judgeship. This judgeship is bordered by the districts of Gorakhpur to the east, Basti to the west, Siddhartha Nagar to the north, and Ambedkar Nagar to the south.

Initially, five courts were set up: District and Sessions Judge, Civil Judge Senior Division, Chief Judicial Magistrate, Civil Judge Junior Division, and Judicial Magistrate. The presiding officers for these courts were appointed through a notification from the Hon’ble High Court on 21 January 2008. Judicial work officially began on 23 January 2008, following the inauguration of the judgeship on the same day.
