The District & Sessions Court in Shivamogga was established before 1 June 1956, as evidenced by the acquittance roll maintained in this Court. Previously, the Shivamogga District & Sessions Court had jurisdiction over three districts: Shivamogga, Chitradurga, and Chikmagalur. However, its jurisdiction was later limited to Shivamogga District after separate District Courts were established in Chitradurga and Chikmagalur on 1st October 1964 and 1st November 1965, respectively. Until 19th October 1978, the Shivamogga District Court had administrative control over the districts of Shivamogga, Chitradurga, and Chikmagalur. However, from that date onwards, each of these three districts has had independent administration over their respective areas.
The District & Sessions Judge serves as the highest judicial authority in the district. A spacious composite Court building was erected near the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Balraj Urs Road, Shivamogga, to accommodate the various Courts in Shivamogga, which commenced operations on 2 December 1973. Shivamogga District includes seven taluks.
