The first Court established by the British Raj in our District was in Barkur, near Brahmavar, known as the District Munsiffs Court. It held jurisdiction over Udupi, Karkala, and Kundapura. In 1898, it relocated to Udupi, a part of the undivided South Kanara District (Dakshina Kannada). After the State Re-organization Act of 1956, South Kanara came under the jurisdiction of the High Court of Mysuru. The Udupi District & Sessions Court commenced on 18 December 2001, covering seven revenue Taluks: Udupi, Kundapura, Karkala, Kaup, Brahmavara, Hebri, and Byndoor. The District Court Complex includes 12 courts, with three on the ground floor and nine on the upper floors. It is centrally located in Udupi City, furnished with essential infrastructure. Kundapura’s court is situated in its town center. Udupi was previously part of Dakshina Kannada District until 25 August 1997 when it became a separate district along with Kundapura and Karkala.
