Dhalai District was formed in 1995 by splitting North Tripura District and incorporating a portion of Amarpur Sub-Division from South Tripura District. The creation aimed at addressing the administrative needs for development and effective governance in predominantly tribal and remote areas. The district derives its name from the Dhalai River, originating within its boundaries. The District and Sessions Judge’s Court is situated in Ambassa, the district headquarters, with additional sub-stations in various parts including Kamalpur for Additional District & Sessions Judge’s Court, Longtharai-Valley for Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate’s Court, and Gonda Twisa.
Situated in the northeastern region of Tripura, the district spans approximately 2312.29 square kilometers. It is predominantly nestled between two mountain ranges, namely the Atharamura Range and the Sakhan Range. Over 70% of the area is characterized by hills and forests. The terrain is predominantly undulating and hilly, interspersed with small water streams (known as ‘twisas’), rivers, and fertile valleys. Major rivers originating from Dhalai include Dhalai, Khowai, Gomati, and Manu. Prominent hills in the district include Atharamura, Longtharai, Kalajhari, and parts of Sakhan. Ambassa, the district headquarters, is approximately 85 kilometers away from the state capital Agartala, accessible via National Highway (NH-08), with a travel time of around 2 to 3 hours. A meter gauge railway link has been established in Ambassa. Agriculture is the primary livelihood for a significant 76% of the population, with many tribal communities still practicing Jhum cultivation (shifting cultivation) in the densely forested hills. The fertile valleys, predominantly inhabited by non-tribals, particularly Bengalis, serve as the main economic hubs of the district.
