The Lawngtlai Court, historically managed by the Deputy Commissioner and his Assistants according to the Rules for the Regulation of the Procedure of Officers Appointed to Administer Justice in the Lushai Hills, 1937, saw a significant transformation with the separation of judiciary from the executive in 2008. Previously, the Deputy Commissioner and his Assistants held powers equivalent to those of Sessions Judge, Chief Judicial Magistrate, and other Judicial Magistrates for criminal cases, as well as civil cases involving non-indigenous tribes.
With the advent of the Mizoram Civil Courts Act, of 2005, Lawngtlai District now hosts various civil courts including those of a District Judge, Senior Civil Judge, and Civil Judge, each with specified pecuniary and territorial jurisdictions. Additionally, the tribal courts within the Chakma Autonomous District Council and Lai Autonomous District Council have their own distinctive customary laws and court structures.
Presently, Lawngtlai operates under the territorial jurisdiction of the Lunglei Judicial District/Lunglei Sessions Division, with a Chief Judicial Magistrate-Cum-Senior Civil Judge overseeing its judicial affairs since the separation of the judiciary from the executive in 2008.
