Sultanpur district, in the Awadh region of Uttar Pradesh, lies on the banks of the holy Gomti River. Later, Alauddin Khalji renamed it Sultanpur after his title, following a conflict with the Bhar rulers.

Under British rule, Sultanpur was developed as a municipality in 1869 and saw infrastructural growth with facilities like a jail, hospital, and town hall. The British razed Old Sultanpur after the 1857 rebellion, marking a significant chapter in its history.
