The Prayagraj (Allahabad) district, situated between 24°47′ and 25°47′ North latitude and 81° and 82°21′ East longitude, spans 170 km east to west and 101 km north to south. Its boundaries include Pratapgarh and Jaunpur districts to the north, separated by the Ganga River, with Varanasi to the east, Mirzapur to the southeast, Madhya Pradesh to the south, Banda to the southwest, and Fatehpur to the west. The present Kaushambi district was part of Prayagraj until 4 April 1997.

Prayagraj’s judicial history traces back to 1801 with the establishment of a judge-magistrate by the East India Company. The High Court, founded in 1866, became India’s fourth oldest. Today, Prayagraj’s judiciary includes the district and sessions judges with jurisdiction over civil, criminal, and matrimonial cases, supported by a network of civil courts and munsifs. The district also houses a juvenile court, fostering reformative justice and nyaya panchayats established under the U.P. Panchayat Raj Act for village-level judicial administration.
