The name “Udalguri”, as per legend, originates from the abundance of “Odal” trees in this region. The District Judiciary of Udalguri was established on 29 September 2011. Since then, the Courts of the District Judge and the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Udalguri have been operating from the existing judicial building intended for the Sub-divisional Judicial Magistrate of Udalguri.
There is no separate building for the District Judge and the Chief Judicial Magistrate, so they continue to function in the current setup. The Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate Court of Udalguri was established in 1986 and initially operated from the office building of the Deputy Commissioner of Udalguri.
Recognizing the need for a dedicated judicial building, a new one was constructed to house the courts of the Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate, Munsiff cum Magistrate, and Judicial Magistrate First Class. However, the government of Assam, through an order dated 31 March 2007, created the positions of District and Sessions Judge and Chief Judicial Magistrate for Udalguri. Initially, Udalguri fell under the jurisdiction of the Darrang District, headquartered in Mangaldai.
The District Judiciary of Udalguri consists of nine sanctioned positions, namely: District & Sessions Judge, Additional District & Sessions Judge, Civil Judge (Senior Division) & Assistant Sessions Judge, Civil Judge (Junior Division), Chief Judicial Magistrate, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate (S), Judicial Magistrate (1st Class), and Judicial Magistrate (2nd Class).
