In the distant past, the hills and forests surrounding the village were home to innumerable wild cows (“Bon” meaning wild and “Gai” meaning cows). Villagers would gather to drive away these wild cows to protect their crops, giving the area the nickname “Bon Cow Village”.
Initially, Bongaigaon district fell under the jurisdiction of Goalpara district, along with Dhubri and Kokrajhar districts, with headquarters in Dhubri. In 1981, Goalpara district was divided into Goalpara, Dhubri, and Kokrajhar districts. However, the judicial operations of these districts remained under Goalpara district’s control, temporarily.
The decision to carve out Bongaigaon district from parts of Goalpara and Kokrajhar districts was made by the Assam Government in 1989. On 29 September 1989, Bongaigaon was declared a separate district with its headquarters in Bongaigaon. The district judiciary of Bongaigaon commenced its operations on 30 October 1992, after bifurcation from Goalpara district.
The creation of the Bongaigaon district judiciary was formalized in 1992 through Government Notification No. JDJ.337/87/183, dated 29 July 1992. The inauguration of the new court building of District & Sessions Judge, Bongaigaon, took place on 29 March 2009, by Mr. Justice Jasti Chelameswar, the then Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court, Guwahati.
Subsequently, additional courts were established, including the Court of Additional District & Sessions Judge (Fast Track Court), Civil Judge & Assistant Sessions Judge, and Chief Judicial Magistrate, as per various government notifications.
Bongaigaon district judiciary comprises one Subdivision named North Salmara, headquartered at Abhayapuri. The Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate (Mufasil) Court and the Munsiff Court at North Salmara, Abhayapuri, were established on 24 April 1987 and 23 July 1988, respectively.
Before the creation of the Chirang District Court, Bongaigaon had another subdivisional court named Bijni, headquartered at Bijni. The Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate (Mufasil) Court and Munsiff Court at Bijni were established on 11 April 1997. However, after the establishment of the Chirang District Court, Bijni Sub-Division came under its jurisdiction.
The District & Sessions Judge heads the Bongaigaon District Judiciary and oversees the operations of the District Court complex. Additionally, the District & Sessions Judge serves as the president of the District Forum and a member of the Motor Accident Claim Tribunal and Lok Adalat.
