Hailakandi was established as a civil subdivision within the Cachar district on 1 June 1869, with its courts falling under the jurisdiction of the District and Sessions Judge’s Court at Silchar.
It was later given the status of a district in 1989. As per Notification No. JD.J231/89/52 dated 8 April 1992, the District and Sessions Judge Court at Hailakandi was officially opened on 20 April 1992. There are eight courts under this jurisdiction.
